Homeopathic medicine is based on the principle that “like cures like.” In other words, a substance that causes certain symptoms in a healthy animal can be used to cure similar symptoms present in a sick animal. Homeopathy has ancient roots. Around 400 B.C., it was discovered that herbs given to a patient in a low dose could cure the same symptoms that they caused in a patient that consumed a larger, poisoning dose.

Today, The Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy recognizes this branch of medicine as a form of treatment that strengthens the natural defense mechanisms of the body. This contrasts with traditional medicine, which focuses on suppressing symptoms.

At Natural Pet, I proudly offer homeopathy as another treatment option for pets that may not have had much success with traditional medicine. Ultimately, my goal of providing homeopathic treatment for dogs and cats is to help them enjoy the best health possible, and the best quality of life.

Are Homeopathic Remedies Safe?
Homeopathic remedies are given orally, and are very safe due to their highly diluted state. However, I do not recommend giving your pet repeated doses of a remedy without your veterinarian’s approval. Furthermore, your pet should only be taking one remedy at any given time. They should not be taking multiple remedies or taking any traditional medicines at the same time.

Vaccines may need to be put on hold while your pet is taking a homeopathic remedy, as vaccines can cause imbalances in the body and interfere with the remedy’s effects.

What to Expect with Homeopathic Treatment for Your Pet
When I prescribe a particular remedy for your pet, it’s based on the totality of all their symptoms. It’s important for us to understand all the changes in your pet’s health, appearance, and behavior so I can select the best remedy for them. If possible, try to keep a written log and take photos and/or videos to give us a better idea of what your pet is experiencing, when, and how frequently.

Following their first dose, your pet may not show improvement overnight, though changes can either happen quickly or gradually, depending on the pet, their condition, and other factors. Also, homeopathy has its limits; it cannot reverse the effects of arthritis or cancer, thought it can lessen the severity of your pet’s symptoms and make them more comfortable. On the other hand, your pet may not experience any improvement in their condition at all, which means they might need a different potency or a different remedy altogether.
